THE POCKET MANUAL, WITH MORE ROOM

PokerStick guide

Keep the game moving. Know what is saved. Understand what the numbers mean.

Table controls

  • Choose Fold, Check/Call, or a legal raise size. Raise amounts are the total target, not an extra amount added to your call. All-in uses your remaining stack.
  • Keyboard: 0 (zero) folds, C checks or calls, R opens sizing, Enter confirms sizing or deals the next hand, and Escape closes sizing. Keyboard actions are disabled while typing or while the table is busy.
  • Check “Leave after this hand” to stop after settlement. “Leave before my next big blind” finishes intervening hands and exits before you post that blind. The two choices are exclusive; uncheck to cancel. Both survive a refresh.
  • Auto-deal is optional and waits six seconds after the runout. It pauses in the lobby, settings, and hidden tabs. Turn it off to take as long as you want for review.

The rules

  • Six-max No-Limit Texas Hold’em uses two private cards and five community cards. Make your best five-card hand using any combination.
  • The button rotates. Small and big blinds are forced bets; betting proceeds preflop, flop, turn, and river. You can check only when nothing is owed.
  • An all-in player can win only the pot layers they contributed to. Uncalled excess is refunded. Tied pots split in whole chips, with odd chips allocated clockwise from the button.
  • Hand ranking, highest first: straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card. An ace can be low in A–2–3–4–5.

Career and the opponent world

  • A new Career starts with $200 in virtual money. The table stack is part of that bankroll, not extra money. Results settle once; winning a pot is not the same as making that entire pot in profit.
  • Higher stakes unlock as your Career reaches the required bankroll. You still need enough money for the table minimum. Leaving a hand open saves its state; it does not skip the result.
  • One hundred opponents have persistent identities, individual money, styles, and memories. They can tire, leave, reload, or rebuild. Web-world time follows the service’s day cycle, not hardware power cycles.
  • Career coaching is only available after the hand or on demand. Practice never changes your Career money or opponent memories.

Practice and review

  • Free includes five practice deals each UTC day. Abandoned hands count; retrying the same request does not count twice. Career and Arena have no practice-hand quota.
  • Instant coaching reviews each move. After Hand waits for the runout. Silent/Exam withholds feedback until the relevant review point. All feedback is heuristic, not a GTO solution.
  • Use hand history for replay and notes. Pro adds advanced analysis, alternative lines, and export. These study tools cannot change a settled result.
  • A Coach invitation shares only the progress described in the consent screen. You may disconnect. A student seat does not automatically grant Pro features.

Statistics glossary

  • VPIP: how often you voluntarily put money into the pot preflop. Forced blinds alone do not count. PFR: how often you raise preflop.
  • AF (aggression factor) compares bets and raises with calls. A player with no calls needs special handling; the statistic is not a percentage.
  • WTSD: how often a player who saw the flop reached showdown. W$SD: how often they won at showdown. Small samples are noisy.
  • BB/hour is measured net big blinds per hour of active play at that stake. Bankroll trends and short-run win rates reflect variance as well as decisions. A model score is not a cash win-rate prediction.

Sound, cards, and accessibility

  • “Sound & cards” provides Mute/25/50/75/100% volume and Hero-only or All Actions sounds. Browsers may require a click before they allow audio.
  • Turn reminders beep every five seconds while you have an action. Turn off the reminder or mute at any time. Hidden tabs do not beep.
  • Choose two-color, four-color, or high-contrast cards. Suit symbols remain visible, so color is never the only cue. Dollars/BB changes table amounts, not Career accounting.
  • After folding, Fast runout removes the remaining presentation delays. Career still settles the whole hand. Browser reduced-motion preferences suppress decorative motion.

Saved data and multiplayer

  • Signed-in Career, practice history, preferences, and Coach connections live on the server. Sound, card palette, and auto-deal are device preferences.
  • The previous v0 workspace remains available with its original saves. Those saves are separate; they were not erased or silently converted into the new Career engine.
  • Ranked Arena needs six ready players. Private tables let you invite friends. Leaving a ranked match can trigger timeout actions; scheduled Career exits are not a way to escape a ranked result.
  • Multiplayer is beta. Keep account credentials private, report abuse, and never treat virtual chips or ratings as something with cash value.
